In this present study we aimed to investigate whether the current levels of a selection of organochlorines (OCs) were associated with altered circulating levels of thyroid hormones (THs) in free-ranging adult glaucous gulls breeding at Bear Island in the Barents Sea. They include Abitibi-Consolidated, Bowater, NorskeCanada, Tembec, and some smaller captive players such as SP Newsprint and Bear Island. The thousands of people who annually tour Bear Island off the coast of North Carolina can now have a better understanding of the barrier island's vibrant ecology, thanks to an exhibit gallery at the recently opened Visitor's Center at Hammocks Beach State Park. |
