On southern border of SC, southwest of Charleston; original county; organized 1768 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the town.

Pop 2005: 137,849. State rank: 11. Pop change: 2000-20005 14.00%; 1990-2000 39.90%. Pop 2000: 120,937 (White 67.40%; Black or African American 24.00%; Hispanic or Latino 6.80%; Asian 0.80%; Other 4.60%). Foreign born: 6.30%. Median age: 35.80.
Income 2000: per capita $25,377; median household $46,992; Pop below poverty level: 10.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $32,456-$34,814.

    On central eastern border of NC, east of Goldsboro; organized as Pamptecough Precinct Dec 3, 1705 (prior to statehood) from Bath County, which was organized in 1696 and abolished in 1739; name changed about 1712. Name Origin: For Henry Somerset (1684-1714), Duke of Beaufort, a Lord Proprietor of the colony of SC. Originally for the Pamptecough (Pamlico) River.
