. The town has some light industry and is the trade and distribution center for nearby farms where sheep, grain, and fruit are raised. It is also a resort. Beaufort West was founded in 1818 and in 1837 became the first municipality in South Africa.

Situated conveniently between Johannsesburg and Cape Town, visitors will find Beaufort West.
The Beaufort West prison, established in 1873, stands right in the middle of a traffic circle in the town's center, "a grim sentinel of order," as the South African writer Jonny Steinberg calls it in the brochure accompanying the exhibition, undisturbed despite the heavy traffic around it.
The youngster struck a chord with tenor Mark Burrows after a meeting in the boy's home town Beaufort West, South Africa.
