On southwestern border of LA, north of Lake Charles; organized Jun 12, 1912 from Calcasieu Parish. Name Origin: For Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard (1818-93), superintendent at West Point who resigned to join the Confederate army (1861); he was the general who directed the bombardment of Fort Sumter and battles of Bull Run and Shiloh.

Area (sq mi): 1165.99 (land 1160.09; water 5.90). Pop per sq mi: 29.80.
Pop 2005: 34,562. State rank: 32. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.80%; 1990-2000 9.70%. Pop 2000: 32,986 (White 83.40%; Black or African American 12.90%; Hispanic or Latino 1.40%; Asian 0.60%; Other 2.20%). Foreign born: 1.10%. Median age: 35.50.
Income 2000: per capita $15,514; median household $32,582; Pop below poverty level: 15.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,825-$20,670.
Unemployment 2004: 6.50%. Change from 2000: -0.90%. Median travel time to work: 31.40 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 42.10%.
