Bebutov, Vasilii Osipovich 

Born 1791, in Tiflis; died there Mar. 10, 1858. Russian infantry general (1856).

Bebutov was descended from an old Armenian princely family. He joined the military in 1809. He participated in the Russo-Turkish War of 1806–12 and the Patriotic War of 1812. In 1816, Bebutov became General A. P. Ermolov’s adjutant. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–29 he took part in the capture of Akhaltsikhe; he governed the Akhaltsikhe Oblast and, after 1830, the Armenian Oblast. During 1844–47, Bebutov commanded the armies operating against Shamil. He was chairman of the council of the central administration and head of the civilian administration of the Transcaucasian Region during 1847–53 and 1854–58. In 1853–54, Bebutov commanded the Caucasian Corps that defeated Turkish forces at Bashkadyklar and Kiuriuk-Dara.
