On southern border with MD, southeast of Johnstown; organized May 9, 1771 (prior to statehood) from Cumberland County. Name Origin: For Fort Bedford, which became the site of the county seat of Bedford. The fort was named in 1759 to honor England's Duke of Bedford.

In west-central VA, west of Lynchburg; organized 1753 from Albemarle and Lunenburg counties. Part annexed to Bedford (independent) city effective July 1, 1993. Name Origin: For John Russell (1710-71), 4th Duke of Bedford, British statesman who negotiated the treaty that ended the French and Indian Wars.
