Bednyi, Boris Vasil’evich 

Born Aug. 12 (25), 1916, in the station of Iaroslavsk, now Krasnodar Krai. Russian Soviet writer. Took part in the Great Patriotic War.

Bednyi graduated from the Leningrad Forestry Academy (1941) and the Gorky Institute of Literature (1952). He worked as an engineer on timber flotage. Bednyi made his debut as a short-story writer in 1948. The book of novellas and short stories The Great Torrent (1952) was dedicated by Bednyi to the workers in the timber enterprise. It was followed by the collections Stories (1954) and Unchangeable Happiness: A Novella and Stories (1962). The novella The Girls (on which the film of the same title was based, 1962) was published in 1961. Bednyi focuses on the moral aspect and spiritual growth of the working man.
