In southeastern TX, northwest of Corpus Christi; organized Dec 8, 1857 from Goliad and Refugio counties. Name Origin: For Barnard E. Bee (1787-1853), TX soldier, statesman, and Minister from TX to the U.S. (1838-41) who opposed the annexation of TX.

Area (sq mi): 880.31 (land 880.14; water 0.17). Pop per sq mi: 37.30.
Pop 2005: 32,873. State rank: 87. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.60%; 1990-2000 28.70%. Pop 2000: 32,359 (White 35.10%; Black or African American 9.90%; Hispanic or Latino 53.90%; Asian 0.50%; Other 21.70%). Foreign born: 2.00%. Median age: 31.80.
Income 2000: per capita $10,625; median household $28,392; Pop below poverty level: 24.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $14,973-$15,695.
Unemployment 2004: 7.90%. Change from 2000: 2.90%. Median travel time to work: 24.20 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 23.20%.
