beech bark disease [bēch ‚bärk di′zēz]
(plant pathology)
A disease of beech caused by the beech scale (Cryptococcus fagi) and a fungus (Nectria coccinea faginata) acting together; bark is destroyed, foliage wilts, and the tree eventually dies.
