The equivalent of Beelzebub in the Old Testament is Baalzebub (Baalzebul), a god in the Philistine city of Ekron. In Jewish mythological and religious thought Baalzebub apparently was gradually transformed from the god of a people hostile to the Jews into one of the most important figures in Jewish demonology.
