Bekariukov, Dmitrii Dmitrievich 

Born Jan. 1 (13), 1861, in the village of Vasil’evka, Volchansk District, Kharkov Province; died Sept. 13, 1934, in Moscow. Soviet activist in the field of school hygiene.

In 1886, Bekariukov graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Kazan. He was exiled to Akmolinsk (1889) for participation in the revolutionary movement. From 1901 he was the secretary and from 1907 the permanent chairman of the Moscow Organization of School Physicians. He wrote the basic manual of school hygiene. From the Great October Socialist Revolution until 1931 he supervised the Moscow School Sanitation Bureau, headed the organization of children’s nutrition centers, and participated in the development of projects for children’s health centers and good school management. He contributed to pedagogical and medical publications. In 1926 he was awarded the title Hero of Labor. From 1931 he worked in the F. F. Erisman Institute of Hygiene.
