Belgrade, Battle of (1456)
a battle between Hungarian and Turkish troops at the walls of Belgrade from July 14 to 22 during Hungary’s struggle against the Turkish conquerors. In June 1456 the troops of the Turkish Sultan Mehmed II besieged Belgrade, which at that time was a frontier fortress of the Kingdom of Hungary. On July 14 reinforcements headed by János Hunyadi broke through to the city; on July 21 the besieged forces fought off an all-out attempt to storm the city, and on July 22 during a sortie outside the walls the Hungarians destroyed the Turkish river flotilla, siege artillery, and encampment, which forced the Turks to make a disorderly retreat. This victory delayed the Turkish advance into Hungary until 1521. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
