Bell, Eric Temple (1883–1960) mathematician; born in Aberdeen, Scotland. Emigrating to America in 1902, he taught longest at the California Institute of Technology (1926–53). He contributed significantly to numerical functions, analytic number theory, multiple periodic functions, and Diophantine analysis. He published Men of Mathematics (1937), 17 science fiction books, short stories, and poetry.
