Bellah, Robert N.

Bellah, Robert N. (Neelly) (1927–  ) sociologist; born in Altus, Okla. He earned a Harvard Ph.D. and taught there (1957–67) before moving to the University of California: Berkeley (1967). A comparative and historical sociologist, he published studies of Asian cultures and explored the relationships between religion and belief, politics, and contemporary culture. His books include Beyond Belief (1970), The Broken Covenant (1975), and The Good Society (coauthored, 1991).
