Belle Fourche (bĕl fsh), river, c.290 mi (470 km) long, rising in NE Wyo., flowing NE and then E to the Cheyenne River in W S.Dak. The Belle Fourche project provides flood control and recreation facilities as well as irrigating c.57,000 acres (23,070 hectares) in South Dakota. Devils Tower National Monument Devils Tower National Monument, 1,347 acres (546 hectares), overlooking the Belle Fourche River, NE Wyo.; it was the first designated U.S. national monument (1906).
