Belogrud, Andrei Evgen’evich 

Born 1875, in Zhitomir; died July 19, 1933, in Gatchina, Leningrad Oblast. Soviet architect.

Belogrud studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art (1901–10) with L. N. Benois. He taught there from 1912 to 1928. (From 1920 to 1922 he was the rector.) In his early work he refined the forms of Renaissance and Romanesque architecture (residences on L. Tolstoy Square and on the Petrograd side of Bol’shoi Avenue, all 1913, Leningrad). During the Soviet period, he created a number of building plans in a heroic and elevated style, stark and massive in form and characteristic of the new era—plans for social and cultural centers, palaces of labor, clubs, and workers’ housing.
