Beltrami, Eugenio (ā
jĕ`nyō bālträ`mē), 1835–99, Italian mathematician. He is famous for his work on non-euclidean geometry, electricity, and magnetism.Beltrami, Eugenio Born Nov. 16, 1835, in Cremona; died Feb. 18, 1900, in Rome. Italian mathematician, member of the National Academy dei Lincei in Rome (1873). He was a professor at the universities in Bologna (1862) and Rome (1873). His primary work was in differential geometry. He demonstrated that the geometry of Lobachevskii (planimetry) is realized on a certain surface called a pseudosphere.
