Belyi
a town and the administrative center of Belyi Raion, Kalinin Oblast, RSFSR; situated on the Obsha River (Zapadnaia Dvina basin), 50 km south of the Nelidovo railroad station (on the Rzhev-Velikie Luki line). Population, 4,500 (1969). There is a flax-processing plant and a lumber yard. Flax is grown in the region of Belyi. The town has been known since the year 1359. Belyi an island in Karskoe Sea, separated from Iamal Peninsula by Malygina Strait. Belyi Island forms part of the Iamalo-Nenets National Okrug, in Tiumen’ Oblast, RSFSR. The island has an area of 1,900 sq km. Its surface is a plain (reaching 24 m in altitude), sloping to the south, and covered with tundra vegetation. It has many lakes.
