Benois, Leontii Nikolaevich 

Born Aug. 11 (23), 1856, in Novy Petergof, near St. Petersburg; died Feb. 8, 1928, in Leningrad. Russian architect; Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1927). Son of the architect N. L. Benois.

In 1879, Benois graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts. He taught in the St. Petersburg Institute of Civil Engineers (1884–92, and 1920–27). He was a professor (1892–1927) and rector (1903–06 and 1911–17) at the Academy of Fine Arts. Benois was honorary chairman of the Society of Architects and Artists and editor of the journal Zodchii (Architect, 1892–95). His works were built in St. Petersburg (the M. I. Glinka Academic Chapel, 1885–89; a residence on the Kamennoostrovskii (now Kirovskii) Avenue, 1911–13; and the building that is now the Soviet department of the Russian Museum, 1914–16), Moscow, Kiev, and Warsaw. Benois created a plan for reorganizing St. Petersburg (1910–13, with the architect M. M. Peretiat-kovich and the engineer F. E. Enakiev).
