Bentivoglio (bān`tēvō`lyō), Italian noble family, one of several powerful clans in the struggle for control of Bologna Bologna , city (1991 pop. 404,378), capital of Emilia-Romagna and of Bologna prov., N central Italy, at the foot of the Apennines and on the Aemilian Way. It is a prosperous commercial and industrial center and an important transportation link between S and N Italy.

Its greatest member was Giovanni II, who was lord—in fact if not in name—from 1462 until 1506, when Pope Julius II took Bologna. Giovanni II maintained a splendid court and beautified his city.
