Berg, Fedor Fedorovich

Born 1793, in Sangaste, now Valga Raion, Estonian SSR; died Jan. 6 (18), 1874, in St. Petersburg. Russian geodesist.

Berg studied at the University of Derpt (now Tartu). During the 1820’s he compiled a military statistical description of Turkey. In 1823 and 1825 he directed expeditions into Middle Asia, and on the basis of materials gathered there a map was drawn up. Berg also produced a survey of the northeastern part of Bulgaria (1828–29). As quartermaster-general of the General Staff (1843) he gave his support to the compilation of the “three-versr” (3.21 km) map of Russia. Berg became an honorary member (1870) of the Russian Geographical Society.
