In northeastern NJ bordering on NY, north of Jersey City; original county, organized Mar 7, 1683. Name Origin: Named by early Dutch settlers for the town of Bergen-op-zoom, North Brabant, Netherlands.

Area (sq mi): 246.80 (land 234.17; water 12.63). Pop per sq mi: 3854.30.
Pop 2005: 902,561. State rank: 1. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.10%; 1990-2000 7.10%. Pop 2000: 884,118 (White 72.30%; Black or African American 5.30%; Hispanic or Latino 10.30%; Asian 10.70%; Other 5.70%). Foreign born: 25.10%. Median age: 39.10.
