Bergmann, Peter G. (Gabriel) (1915– ) physicist; born in Berlin, Germany. He came to the U.S.A. to become Albert Einstein's assistant at the Institute for Advanced Studies, Princeton, N.J. (1936–41). After teaching at several American universities, he became professor of physics at Syracuse University, N.Y. (1946–82). His research in general relativity included studies of wave theory, electron optics, and irreversible processes.
