Baharampur (bəhä`rəmpôr), Berhampur, or Berhampore (bûr`əmpôr), city (1991 pop. 126,400), West Bengal state, E central India. It is a road and rail hub; jute and rice are traded. Its industries include silk weaving, ivory carving, rice and oil-seed milling, and precious-metal working. It was the scene of the first major confrontation of the Indian Mutiny Indian Mutiny, 1857–58, revolt that began with Indian soldiers in the Bengal army of the British East India Company but developed into a widespread uprising against British rule in India. It is also known as the Sepoy Rebellion, sepoys being the native soldiers.
