Name Origin: Spanish for 'little Bernal,' possibly for a young member of the Gonzales-Bernal family who lived in the area as early as 1680. It may also have been named for Fray Juan Bernal, a friend of one of the community leaders. Area (sq mi): 1168.65 (land 1166.03; water 2.62). Pop per sq mi: 517.60. Pop 2005: 603,562. State rank: 1. Pop change: 2000-20005 8.40%; 1990-2000 15.80%. Pop 2000: 556,678 (White 48.30%; Black or African American 2.80%; Hispanic or Latino 42.00%; Asian 1.90%; Other 24.60%). Foreign born: 8.60%. Median age: 35.00. Income 2000: per capita $20,790; median household $38,788; Pop below poverty level: 13.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $27,046-$30,064. Unemployment 2004: 5.10%.
