Bernard, Jessie Shirley

Bernard, Jessie Shirley (b. Ravitch) (1903–  ) sociologist; born in Minneapolis, Minn. She collaborated with her husband Luther Lee Bernard (until his death in 1951) on works including Origins of American Sociology (1943). Her solo works included American Family Behavior (1942) and American Community Behavior (1949, revised). After resigning from Pennsylvania State University (1947–64), she was an independent scholar and author of influential feminist analyses such as Women, Wives, Mothers (1975) and The Female World from a Global Perspective (1987).
