Bernburg (bĕrn`b
rk), city (1994 pop. 37,300), Saxony-Anhalt, E Germany, on the Saale River. It has important salt mines, a large soda plant, sugar refineries, and machinery plants. There is a 16th-century castle in the city.Bernburg a city in the German Democratic Republic, in the Halle district, on the Saale River. Population, 45,800 (1967). It is a transport junction. Bernburg has a large soda industry, machine-building industry, the most productive cement factory in the GDR, and sugar industry. Potassium salt and rock salt are mined in the surrounding area.
