In south-central GA, north of Valdosta; organized Feb 25, 1856 from Lowndes, Coffee, and Irwin counties. Name Origin: For John Macpherson Berrien (1781-1856), U.S. senator from GA (1825-29; 1841-52) and U.S. Attorney General (1829-31).

Area (sq mi): 457.78 (land 452.41; water 5.37). Pop per sq mi: 36.90.
Pop 2005: 16,708. State rank: 96. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.90%; 1990-2000 14.70%. Pop 2000: 16,235 (White 84.80%; Black or African American 11.40%; Hispanic or Latino 2.40%; Asian 0.30%; Other 2.80%). Foreign born: 1.40%. Median age: 35.20.
Income 2000: per capita $16,375; median household $30,044; Pop below poverty level: 17.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,928-$23,288.
