Berzeviczy, Gergely
Born June 15, 1763, in Vel’ká Lomnica; died Feb. 23, 1822, in Tatranská Lomnica. Hungarian economist. Berzeviczy received a lawyer’s diploma in 1783. He maintained relations with the independence movement of the Hungarian nobility and the Hungarian Jacobins. In 1795 he began working on economic problems. In 1802 he was elected a member of the Göttingen Scientific Society. He sharply criticized the feudal system in Hungary. Although he defended freedom of foreign trade, he spoke out against Austria’s economic policy, which was directed at enslaving Hungary. WORKSDe commercio et industria Hungariae.
