Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities. The city of Beverly Hills has become synonymous with wealth, luxury, and fame, and its exclusive Rodeo Drive shopping area is known worldwide. The West Coast facility of the Museum of Television and Radio, housed in a building designed by Richard Meier Meier, Richard , 1934–, American architect, b. Newark, N.J., educated at Cornell Univ. During the 1960s, he was a member of the New York "Five" or "white" architects, a group that emulated the early International style.

Beverly Hills

City (pop., 2000: 33,784), southwestern California, U.S. It is surrounded by the city of Los Angeles and adjoining Hollywood. It was established in 1906 as a residential area called Beverly. The Beverly Hills Hotel was built in 1912. Movie stars Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks lived there in 1919, beginning the fashion among Hollywood celebrities of building lavish homes in Beverly Hills. Occupying an area of 5.7 sq mi (14.8 sq km), the city is crossed by the famous streets of Sunset Boulevard, Santa Monica Boulevard, and Rodeo Drive.
