In south-central TX, southwest of Austin; original county, established Mar 17, 1836 (prior to statehood) from Old Mexican Municipality. Name Origin: For the Presidio of San Antonio de Bexas (later known as the Alamo), named for the second son of the Duke of Bexar, of the Spanish royal family. Alternate spelling of Bejar.

Area (sq mi): 1256.66 (land 1246.82; water 9.84). Pop per sq mi: 1217.80.
Pop 2005: 1,518,370. State rank: 4. Pop change: 2000-20005 9.00%; 1990-2000 17.50%. Pop 2000: 1,392,931 (White 35.60%; Black or African American 7.20%; Hispanic or Latino 54.30%; Asian 1.60%; Other 22.30%). Foreign born: 10.90%. Median age: 32.10.
Income 2000: per capita $18,363; median household $38,328; Pop below poverty level: 15.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $27,322-$27,810.
Unemployment 2004: 5.80%. Change from 2000: 1.70%. Median travel time to work: 24.00 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 4.30%.
