Bezrukov, Panteleimon Leonidovich 

Born Feb. 2 (15), 1909, in Moscow. Soviet geologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1968).

Since 1946, Bezrukov has headed the department of oceanic geology that he organized at the P. P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He has led many marine expeditions on the Vitiaz’. Bezrukov’s studies of sea-floor deposits in the seas of the Far East and the Pacific and Indian oceans and his works on the theory of sediment formation in oceans are widely known. He established the zonal character of deposits on the floor of oceans and seas and their connection with the complex system of natural phenomena in the ocean. He received the State Prize of the USSR for his discovery and study of the Karatau phosphorite basin (1946) and for his oceanological studies on the Vitiaz’ (1959). He was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor.
