Bharatpur (bərŭt`p r), city (1991 pop. 156,880), Rajasthan state, N central India. It is a district administrative center and agricultural market. The city is noted for products fashioned from ivory and sandalwood. Important industries include railway workshops, metalworks, automobile factories, and oil mills. The city is thought to have been founded in 1733 and named after Bharat, a figure in Hindu mythology. The British captured Bharatpur in 1826.Bharatpuror BhurtporeCity (pop., 2001: 204,587), Rajasthan state, northwestern India. Located west of Agra, it was founded c. 1733 and was the capital of the princely state of Bharatpur. It was so strongly fortified that it successfully resisted a British siege in 1805, and it was not taken by them until 1826.
