Bigelow, Henry B. (Bryant) (1879–1967) oceanographer; born in Boston, Mass. He served Harvard as a professor of zoology and curator of its Museum of Comparative Zoology (1905–50). His committee on the importance of marine research led to the creation of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Cape Cod (1930). An advocate of keeping oceanography viable by the constant influx of new ideas, Bigelow gained international fame for his research on jellyfish, sharks, and rays.
