Established: October 15, 1966.
Location:In south-central Montana and north-central Wyoming. There are two visitor centers and other developed facilities in Fort Smith, Montana and near Lovell, Wyoming. To get to the north end of park, take I-90 to Hardin, MT, and Hwy 313 40 miles south to Fort Smith. To get to the south end of park, take US 310 from Billings, MT or US 14A from Sheridan, WY to Lovell, and continue 2 miles east on Highway 14A to Highway 37, then north 9 miles.
Facilities:Campgrounds (open all year; @di), picnic area, rest rooms (é), groceries, boat rental, boat ramp, visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Camping, hiking, biking, swimming, boating, fishing, wildlife viewing, hunting, snowshoeing.
Special Features:Bighorn Lake, formed by Yellowtail Dam on the Bighorn River, extends 71 miles through Wyoming and Montana, including 55 miles through spectacular Bighorn Canyon. The Crow Indian Reservation borders a large part of the area.

To a hiker crossing the scrubby, ochre flats of Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area last July, the sprawling archaeological encampment would have seemed out of place.

Six additional top birding parks, with two "high" categories each, are Redwood, Glacier, Yellowstone, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Rocky Mountain, and Bighorn Canyon.
