binary exponential backoff

Also found in: Acronyms, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
binary exponential backoff - An algorithm for dealing with contention in the use of a network. To transmit a packet the host sets a local parameter, L to 1 and transmits in one of the next L slots. If a collision occurs, it doubles L and repeats.

Bi-directional Binary Exponential Index Algorithm The Bi-directional Binary Exponential Index (BBEI) algorithm [18] is originally inspired from the binary exponential backoff algorithm, which is commonly used to schedule retransmissions after collisions in Ethernet networks [19].
The binary exponential backoff (BEB), a widely used backoff algorithm, adjusts the contention window size by indirectly estimating the traffic in the communication medium at individual nodes, in effect by counting consecutive collisions involving the same packet.
