Binford, Lewis R. (Roberts) (1930– ) anthropologist, archaeologist; born in Norfolk, Va. A faculty member of the University of New Mexico (1970), Binford pioneered the anthropologically-oriented "new archaeology," using quantifiable data to study evolutionary processes in Navajo, Eskimo, and Australian aboriginal cultures.
