Bío-Bío River

Bío-Bío River

River, south-central Chile. Rising in the Andes Mountains, it flows northwestward 240 mi (380 km) to enter the Pacific Ocean near Concepción. Though it is one of Chile's longest rivers, it is shallow and navigable only by flat-bottomed boats.

For decades, Chile's Mapuche people have watched development projects--such as the Ralko dam on the Biobio River and the construction of highways--devastate their land, destroying their way of life as well as the ecosystem.
In Chile Juan Pablo Orrego and his organization, the Group de Accion por el Biobio struggled to prevent the ecological destruction of the country's Biobio River valley, threatened by a string of massive dams.
Orrego has successfully challenged plans to build a series of Large hydroelectric dams on the Biobio River.
