Biocenometer
a device for counting terrestrial insects and other invertebrates; used in ecological studies. A biocenometer is a bottomless cylinder or cube whose sides and top are covered with a fine netting or gauze. For use, the biocenometer is quickly placed on a test plot 0.25–1 sq m in size (to prevent the animals from escaping). The trapped animals are removed from the biocenometer, killed, counted by groups and species, and weighed, after which their relative numbers and mass per unit of area of a given biotope are determined.
