gasification [′gas·ə·fə′kā·shən] (chemical engineering) Any chemical or heat process used to convert a substance to a gas; coal is converted by the Hygas process to a gaseous fuel. (mining engineering) A method for exploiting poor-quality coal and thin coal seams by burning the coal in place to produce combustible gas which can be burned to generate power or processed into chemicals and fuels.
