Bird, Junius (Bouton) (1907–82) archaeologist; born in Rye, N.Y. He rose from field assistant to curator of South American archaeology at the American Museum of Natural History (1931–73), becoming an authority on early cultures of the Western Hemisphere, especially pre-Columbian textiles. His important discoveries include paleo-Indian and mammal remains in southern Chile (1934–37) and textile fragments at Huaca Prieta, Peru (1946–47).
