Birdsell, J. B. (Joseph Benjamin) (1908– ) physical anthropologist born in South Bend, Ind. A professor at the University of California: Los Angeles (1947–75), his long-term research in Australia led to his trihybrid theory (1967) that Australian aborigines derive from three separate circumpacific populations.
