The utility in Windows Vista that encrypts the contents of the hard disk. At startup, the drive must be unlocked by typing in a password or inserting a USB flash drive that contains the password. If a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip is on the motherboard, BitLocker uses it to generate keys based on system files. If any of these files have changed, BitLocker keeps the data encrypted. BitLocker is available only in the two high-end versions of Vista--Ultimate and Enterprise--and your computer must contain a special microchip, called a Trusted Platform Module (TPM), which is built into many new computers; it can be added later as a thumb drive plugged into a USB port. It includes strong cross-platform key management offering management support for systems such as BitLocker. 2 release integrating Vista BitLocker Management which will be rolled out this fall. |
