bit field

(data)bit field - Part of an item of data, storage location or message, identified as a certain number of contiguous bits starting at a certain bit position within the data. Bit position zero is usually the least significant bit.

For example, in an ARM machine code instruction the four-bit field at bits 28 to 31 (the four most significant bits in the 32-bit word) is the "condition code".

The other interface is more textual and presents the user with register and bitfield names and a 'click and insert' method for creating instructions that read and write registers, wait for bits to be set or cleared, etc.
The EDE allows in situ editing of register values by enabling the developer to set the values at a symbolic level, rather than at the individual bitfield level.
He adds, "Not only do we have the signal visualization tool plugging into the debugger, but also peripheral displays -- for example, to display the Ethernet registers along with text interpretation of the contents of different status bitfields.
