Black, Harold Stephen (1898–1983) electrical engineer, inventor; born in Leominster, Mass. After graduating from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1921 he went to work for Western Electric, where after six years of persistent research he solved the problem of distortion in telephone communications with the invention of a negative feedback amplifier.
