Blackmore, Richard Dodridge
Born June 7, 1825, in Berkshire; died Jan. 20, 1900, in Teddington. English writer. Son of a country clergyman. Blackmore was educated at Oxford University and became a lawyer and a teacher. He published the anthology Poems by Melanter (1854), and is the author of the historical novels Lorna Doone (1869), The Maid of Sker (1872), and others. The first of these, which brought Blackmore widespread fame, portrays 17th-century England. Blackmore’s heroines are girls from the common people.
