In south-central TX, west of Austin; organized Feb 12, 1858 from Gillespie and Comal counties. Name Origin: For the Blanco River, which runs through the south of the county; Spanish 'white'; origin uncertain.

Area (sq mi): 713.41 (land 711.24; water 2.16). Pop per sq mi: 12.80.
Pop 2005: 9,110. State rank: 171. Pop change: 2000-20005 8.20%; 1990-2000 41.00%. Pop 2000: 8,418 (White 82.10%; Black or African American 0.70%; Hispanic or Latino 15.30%; Asian 0.20%; Other 8.10%). Foreign born: 5.00%. Median age: 41.20.
Income 2000: per capita $19,721; median household $39,369; Pop below poverty level: 11.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $25,302-$27,473.
Unemployment 2004: 4.30%. Change from 2000: 1.60%. Median travel time to work: 31.40 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 44.00%.
