blepharospasm [′blef·ə·rō‚spaz·əm]
(medicine) Spasmodic winking due to spasms of the orbicular muscle of the eyelid. Blepharospasm contraction of the orbicular muscle of the eye, leading to the persistent spasmodic closing of the lids. Blepharospasm occurs with acute diseases of the eye, trauma to the eye, and sometimes with hysteria and traumatic neurosis. Treatment involves removing the cause which led to the disorder.
