Blinova, Ekaterina Nikitichna 

Born Nov. 24 (Dec. 7), 1906, in Kamensk-Shakhtinskii, Rostov Oblast. Soviet scholar. Specialist in the area of dynamic meteorology. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953).

In 1928, Blinova graduated from North Caucasus University (Rostov-on-Don). From 1935 to 1943 she worked at the Main Geophysical Observatory; from 1943 to 1958, at the Central Institute of Forecasting; and from 1958 to 1961, at the Institute of Applied Geophysics. Since 1961 she has headed a department of the Meteorological Computer Center.

In 1936 she studied the conditions of stability of an atmospheric front, developed a theory of radiant equilibrium in the atmosphere, and quantitatively explained the existence of so-called centers of atmospheric activity. She proposed methods of long-term weather forecasting in 1943 and 1961. Blinova’s work A Hydrodynamic Theory of Pressure Waves, Temperature Waves, and Centers of Atmospheric Activity (1943) laid the foundations for hydrodynamic long-term weather forecasting. She has received the Order of the Badge of Honor and medals.
