His father, Daniel Bliss (1823–1916) was the founder and the president (1866–1902) of Syrian Protestant College (later renamed the American University of Beirut). Howard Bliss graduated from Union Theological Seminary (1887) and was a Congregational minister in Montclair, N.J. (1894–1902). He succeeded his father as president of Syrian Protestant College (1903–20). During his tenure he increased the size of the non-Christian student body. Through frankness and diplomacy he kept the college intact during World War I. He died in New Hampshire and was buried near Mount Monadnock. |
